The U.S. Department of Energy's Ames National Laboratory has commissioned a plasma atomization system, marking its first-ever capability to process refractory metal powders such as tungsten (melting point 3,422°C) and molybdenum (2,622°C). This breakthrough extends into a thermal and material range previously out of reach, adding a domestic powder production option for additive manufacturing, defense applications, and high-temperature alloys in the United States.
