304L Stainless Steel Powder

Stainless Steel Powders · Metal Additive Manufacturing Powder

304L is the low-carbon version of 304 stainless steel (C ≤0.03% vs ≤0.08%). The reduced carbon suppresses chromium carbide precipitation during the thermal cycles of welding and printing, giving markedly better intergranular corrosion resistance — the most balanced "weldability + corrosion resistance" austenitic grade. In additive manufacturing the process window is mature: 304L covers general structural parts, chemical piping and MIM feedstock. Compared with 316L it sacrifices a little chloride pitting resistance but costs less, making it the economical default for non-marine general engineering. When buying, verify the actual carbon content (it must really meet the L grade), and for printing-grade powder check sphericity, oxygen content and inclusion cleanliness.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between 304L and 316L powder?

316L adds 2-3% molybdenum, which raises chloride pitting and crevice corrosion resistance. 304L costs less and is sufficient for general structural parts, chemical piping, food and pharmaceutical equipment; choose 316L for marine or chloride-rich environments.

How do I confirm the powder really meets the L grade?

Ask the supplier for the mill certificate and check the measured carbon content (≤0.03%). For printed parts, verify density and inclusion levels on a test coupon before volume orders.

What particle size should I use for LPBF?

15-53 µm is the mainstream LPBF cut for 304L; DED typically uses 53-150 µm, and MIM uses finer feedstock powder. Confirm the cut matches your machine before ordering.
