7075 Aluminum Alloy Powder

Aluminum Alloy Powders · Metal Additive Manufacturing Powder

7075 is the high-strength aerospace Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy: peak-aged T6 strength exceeds most other aluminum grades, which is why airframe structures, wing components and high-strength brackets have used it for decades. In powder form it is also the most crack-susceptible common aluminum for LPBF — printing 7075 requires dedicated parameter development (and in research, composition modification routes), so powder demand sits mainly in DED/repair and specialty AM projects. Chemistry is fully standardized (UNS A97075, GB/T 3190, AMS 4045 for plate), making certificate checks simple: verify measured Zn (5.1-6.1%), Mg (2.1-2.9%) and Cu (1.2-2.0%). Specify the aging condition (T6/T73) you plan to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is 7075 difficult to print?

The high Zn/Mg/Cu content gives the strongest aging response but also the highest solidification-cracking tendency among common aluminums in LPBF. Printing needs dedicated parameter windows; most current AM usage is DED/repair rather than powder-bed volume production.

Is 7075 powder worth the extra cost over AlSi10Mg?

Only when you need wrought-7075-class strength. AlSi10Mg prints far more easily. For repair of 7075 airframe components or high-strength brackets, 7075 powder is the right call despite the process effort.

What should I verify on the certificate?

Measured Zn (5.1-6.1%), Mg (2.1-2.9%) and Cu (1.2-2.0%), plus the powder's particle-size cut matching your process, and confirm which aging condition (T6/T73) your supplier's data references.
