According to a VoxelMatters report on August 23, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Idaho National Laboratory (INL) have launched a collaboration to expand the U.S. domestic pressure vessel supply chain using wire-arc additive manufacturing. At the Materials and Manufacturing Innovation for Nuclear Decarbonization (M2IND) event, the teams showcased a demonstration pressure vessel printed from nuclear-grade steel alloy. The vessel was fabricated on ORNL's three-armed MedUSA platform, which builds large components from molten metal wire. INL contributes expertise in nuclear reactor design and artificial intelligence, while ORNL provides additive manufacturing research and manufacturing demonstration facilities. The two labs are advancing so-called "born-qualified" pressure vessels—components qualified based on in-situ data captured during printing rather than post-production testing. According to the report, MedUSA printed a small nuclear pressure vessel in July, and Antares Nuclear's R1 Mark-0 microreactor achieved criticality at INL in June. The team is now applying the approach to Antares' neutron sensor brackets, with potential applications ranging across chemical refining, oil and gas, defense, and aerospace. This work remains in the research and development validation phase.
