Swedish Steel Group SSAB unveiled Armox® 500 AM powder at the Eurosatory defense exhibition in Paris, claiming it as the world's first armor-grade steel powder designed specifically for additive manufacturing. The powder exhibits ballistic performance equivalent to SSAB Armox® 500 rolled armor plate, is compatible with L-PBF and DED processes, comes in particle sizes of 20-53µm (L-PBF) and 53-150µm (DED), and requires no additional heat treatment for printed parts. It is particularly suited for printing customized housings for vulnerable external components on armored vehicles (cameras, antenna mounts, radar systems, hydraulic connectors, etc.), enabling precise protection and weight reduction with geometric freedom unattainable by traditional rolled plates. SSAB produces the powder at its Oxelösund plant in Sweden, plans to expand in 2026, and aims for gradual commercial production by Q1 2028 with a target annual capacity of approximately 350 tons, including an optional zero-fossil-carbon SSAB Zero™ version.
