A research team at Beijing University of Science and Technology has found that introducing trace amounts of air (oxygen and nitrogen) during additive manufacturing of Ti56Zr30Nb14 medium-entropy alloys can replace high-purity inert gases. After optimization, yield strength increased by 67% to approximately 1 GPa, and tensile ductility improved by 64% to about 18%, breaking the strength-ductility trade-off. This low-cost, scalable method offers a new path for fabricating strong and tough metallic materials.
