A research team from the Technical University of Munich and other institutions published a paper in Additive Manufacturing, demonstrating temperature control of melt pools in metal powder bed fusion by inversely designing laser beam shapes. The study employs simulation-based gradient optimization to generate three novel beam shapes—axisymmetric, laterally symmetric, and unconstrained—aiming for rectangular melt tracks and lower melt pool temperatures. Experiments used a spatial light modulator for flexible shaping, with melt track dimensions deviating less than 20% from microscopic images, and multispectral imaging validated the temperature control effect. This method significantly reduces evaporation, offering a new pathway for improved process control.
