Siemens Energy and GEFERTEC will showcase the serial production results of Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) for steam turbine blades at the WAAMathon 2026 in Berlin on June 11. Traditional casting processes are limited by material procurement lead times and a 70% machining scrap rate, while WAAM's near-net shaping improves material utilization from approximately 30% to 80%, reduces delivery time by 75%, and achieves cost savings of about 15%. In fall 2023, Siemens Energy produced its 1,000th turbine blade using WAAM, becoming the first company globally to achieve serial production in this field. Challenges for WAAM include converting highly twisted turbine blade geometries into a stable, repeatable additive process and the lack of available certification standards.
