Swiss satellite communications company SWISSto12 has signed a contract with German space subsystem consortium HPS/LSS to manufacture a large deployable reflector subsystem for the NEASTAR-1 mission. The reflector, with a diameter of 5 meters, operates in the L-band and will be deployed in orbit after launch, integrated with SWISSto12's HummingSat small GEO satellite platform. The mission aims to achieve direct-to-device media broadcasting from a single geostationary orbit, replacing distributed low Earth orbit constellation solutions. The project is jointly funded by the European Space Agency, the German Aerospace Center, and the EU's Horizon 2020 program, aiming to strengthen European end-to-end space system capabilities. The combination of the HummingSat platform with a large deployable L-band reflector creates a new category of space systems for direct-to-device services, enabling operators to obtain critical wide-coverage network capabilities without relying on large satellite constellations. HPS/LSS joins SWISSto12's German supply chain network, including companies such as ASP, AST, and DLR, and this collaboration demonstrates how European industrial cooperation can support next-generation connectivity technologies.
