U.S. space company Rocket Lab has rolled out its 1,000th Rutherford engine, achieving an annual target of one thousand units. This engine is the world’s first 3D-printed electric-pump-fed rocket engine for orbital launches, used in the Electron rocket, with core components such as the combustion chamber and injectors manufactured via 3D printing, taking just 24 hours per engine. Production speed has increased from one engine per month in 2017 to roughly 200 per year currently. As of the end of 2025, the engine has supported over 70 successful launches, with more than 800 engines flown to space. Upstream metal powders are supplied by Carpenter Technology, while downstream 3D printing equipment comes from manufacturers such as EOS and Nikon SLM Solutions. The next-generation Archimedes engine continues the additive manufacturing approach, featuring a 3D-printed turbopump and thrust chamber, and has already entered testing.
