Swiss startup a-metal has developed compact metal 3D printing systems targeting SMEs, laboratories, and educational institutions that find traditional LPBF systems prohibitive due to cost, space, operational complexity, or powder handling. The pre-production system features a build volume of 150×150×150mm, a layer thickness of 30μm, a 200W fiber laser, and operates on standard 230V power. A key design focus is reducing powder contact – material handling, filling, and powder removal are conducted in a protective gas atmosphere via cartridges. The system is operated via a touchscreen, supports CLI+ format data transfer, and can integrate into existing CAD/CAM workflows and small-scale production environments. Applications include prototyping, small series production, dental technology, tool making, training, and decentralized production of small metal components. Executive Director Stephan Steiner states that the approach aims to lower the entry barrier for metal additive manufacturing without sacrificing industrial processing characteristics, reducing dependence on highly specialized personnel and lowering both investment and operating costs.
