U.S. metal powder manufacturer Metal Powder Works (MPW) has extended its multi-year joint development agreement with Westinghouse Electric Company into a third phase, focusing on powder technology for nuclear-grade additive manufacturing components. In the previous two phases, MPW's patented DirectPowder process demonstrated the ability to surpass conventional atomization methods in powder performance. The nuclear energy industry is projected to exceed a market size of $40 billion in 2026; by 2034, consumption of additive manufacturing materials in the energy sector is expected to surpass $800 million, with nuclear energy identified as the fastest-growing segment. This collaboration upgrade signals that MPW's nuclear-grade powder has the potential to transition from R&D validation to scaled application.
