Austrian metal additive manufacturing company Incus and German counterpart MetShape are collaborating to transition Lithography-based Metal Manufacturing (LMM) from the lab to the factory floor. LMM technology layers a metal-powder-filled resin (approximately 55% by volume) and cures it sequentially, followed by debinding and sintering to near full density. Green parts require no support structures, as the material acts as a support medium, and the process eliminates loose powder handling, high-power lasers, and inert atmospheres during printing. This method triples the production capacity of orthodontic brackets compared to Metal Injection Molding (MIM), reduces surgical instrument component costs by up to tenfold, and achieves an annual output of 2 million small parts with just two printers. Sintered surface roughness is approximately 2 microns Ra, enabling direct sintering of M1.5 internal threads, dimensional tolerances within 0.5% of target values, and a debinding-sintering cycle of ≤24 hours.
