On October 7, 2026, the European additive manufacturing technology platform AM Europe released the summary of the 'European Additive Manufacturing Research Capability Map' report, based on evidence from 83 research institutions across 18 countries, covering seven major capability domains including materials, digital technologies, testing, and industrial applications. The report concludes that Europe has a strong additive manufacturing research foundation, and the next challenge is to translate specialized capabilities into qualified, repeatable, and commercially viable industrial-scale production. Statistics show that metal additive manufacturing and advanced materials appear in the capability items of 66 institutions, making it the most widely covered area; circular economy, repair, and industrial adoption appear in 65 institutions, and testing, inspection, and quality assurance in 63. Capabilities cover specialized fields such as aerospace and defense, artificial intelligence, polymers and composites, and healthcare. The report notes that these overlapping categories record the presence or absence of capabilities, not the scale or maturity of individual projects. The report also points out imbalances in access to capabilities: small businesses struggle to identify suitable facilities, compare services, and finance certification; inconsistent data formats and testing requirements make research results difficult to reuse; and after public funding ends, promising demonstration projects may lack industrial uptake. Based on this, AM Europe proposes a European policy agenda: accessible infrastructure, shared testing, reusable evidence, and a clearer path from research to production, and states it will prioritize industrial competitiveness, sustainability, defense readiness, and healthcare innovation to connect research institutions, businesses, and policymakers. Value for powder buyers: ① 66 European institutions are engaged in metal AM and advanced materials R&D, serving as a dense collaborative entry point for new material grades and process validation; powder suppliers can enter the European validation system through joint projects; ② the report highlights the 'research-to-production' bottleneck, and powder manufacturers with batch stability and certification support capabilities are exactly the external supply needed by European industry; ③ pay attention to the implementation window for AM Europe's subsequent industrial partner programs and customer trial support policies, and establish European channels in advance.
