On October 4, 2026, Biotrade republished a study from the Journal of Materials Research and Technology (JMRT): Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) architected metal metamaterials for biomimetic applications—using Ti-6Al-4V as the material system, a bionic torsion-focused radial gradient lattice design was developed through computational modeling. The study shows that at matched relative density, gradient lattices achieve up to 30% higher torsional strength and up to 169% longer fatigue life; under torsional loading, stress concentration at the second-to-last node drives fatigue crack initiation, and finite element (FE) mapping links the gradient design to reduced peak node stresses—the gradient distribution redistributes material to high-stress regions at the lattice periphery. Industry significance: previous lattice structure studies mostly focused on axial compressive loading, and this study fills the fatigue data gap under torsional loading; the radial gradient design method can be transferred to applications such as biomimetic implants and lightweight structural components subjected to torsional loads. Value for powder buyers: ① Ti-6Al-4V medical-grade powder achieves improved usage efficiency under gradient lattice design, reducing material usage for equivalent mechanical performance; ② the promotion of additive design methods for biomimetic implants and torsion-bearing structural components will support continued demand for medical titanium powder grades (Ti-6Al-4V G23 ELI); ③ attention can be paid to joint validation needs between gradient lattice design services and powder suppliers.
