Portsmouth, Virginia-based Radian Forge has closed a $2.5 million Series Seed financing round (announced September 15), led by Veteran Ventures Capital Fund II with participation from Virginia Innovation Partnership Corporation (VIPC) and others. The company uses large-scale wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) to produce large metal components for the U.S. Navy and maritime industry, reducing lead times by 40%-80% compared to traditional forging and casting. Its customers include the U.S. Navy and Northrop Grumman. The funding will be used to expand production capacity to serve the Navy's industrial base. In February, the Virginia governor announced a $10.5 million expansion plan (adding 53 jobs). WAAM uses metal wire as feedstock, with large single components consuming substantial amounts of welding wire-grade alloys, creating sustained demand for wire-based metal materials such as titanium, nickel-based alloys, and steel.
