Belgian company ValCUN has introduced Melt Metal Deposition (MMD) technology to address challenges in aluminum alloy additive manufacturing. The technology achieved commercialization in 2024 via the Minerva printer, using an electrically heated crucible to heat aluminum wire to 700°C and depositing it layer by layer through controlled volume extrusion. The process requires no degreasing or sintering, supports 75° overhangs and 25 mm bridge structures, and produces parts ready for use without hot isostatic pressing. Traditional aluminum powder bed fusion techniques are limited by high reflectivity and thermal conductivity, often using easy-to-print alloy powders like AlSi10Mg. MMD technology is compatible with industrial standard aluminum alloys such as Al 4008 and Al 4043, eliminating the need for qualified alternative materials. It poses no risk of powder explosion, requires no vacuum chamber or inert gas, and its compact equipment can operate in open environments, significantly reducing infrastructure investment. This provides automotive, aerospace, and other industries with an additive manufacturing solution that directly utilizes standard aluminum alloys.
