A joint research team from Jinan University has achieved near-full-density precipitation-hardening stainless steel CX with balanced strength and impact toughness in laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) by optimizing process parameters with 80μm and 100μm layer thicknesses and coarse powder particles. Densities reached 99.99% for both layer thicknesses, effectively addressing low forming efficiency and high material cost challenges in tool steel LPBF. Microstructural analysis revealed that horizontally oriented samples exhibited finer grains, higher austenite content, and superior yield strength and ductility compared to vertical samples. Increasing layer thickness from 80μm to 100μm led to a slight decrease in impact toughness due to minimally increased porosity. The coarse powder plus large layer thickness process significantly enhances forming efficiency and reduces material cost without sacrificing densification, offering direct engineering value for additive manufacturing of tool steels.
