Swedish powder metallurgy near-net-shape HIP service provider MTC Powder Solutions has purchased a QIH 286 large-scale hot isostatic pressing (HIP) system from Swedish high-pressure system manufacturer Quintus, expanding its PM-HIP production capacity and complex geometry component manufacturing capabilities. The system features a work zone diameter of 1600 mm and height of 3500 mm, with a working pressure of 150 MPa and maximum temperature of 1250°C, making it one of the largest of its kind in Europe. HIP is a critical post-processing technology in additive manufacturing, used for densification of powders and solids across materials including ceramics, metals, composites, light-weight materials, high-speed steels, tool steels, superalloys, and high-entropy alloys. Metal injection molded parts, sintered powder compacts, and metal additively manufactured parts can all undergo HIP post-processing; canned powders can also be directly consolidated into solid parts via PM HIP (near-net-shape). The company was formed in 2020 after the acquisition of the former Sandvik Powder Solutions business, originally under the Sandvik Group, by Japan's MTC Group. This new capacity will support more efficient production and enhance reliability in large-scale manufacturing.
