Canada Scandium has signed a mutual non-disclosure agreement with the University of Waterloo to collaborate on additive manufacturing research for aluminum-scandium (Al-Sc) alloys, initially focusing on reducing production costs using laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) technology. The agreement formally links Canada Scandium's Scandium+ division with the university's Multi-Scale Additive Manufacturing (MSAM) Lab, which boasts over CAD 25 million in research facilities as one of Canada's leading metal 3D printing research centers. Simultaneously, Scandium is advancing its Crater Lake scandium mining project in Quebec—the largest primary scandium source in North America—alongside the commercialization of Al-Sc alloys. The essence of this industry-academia alliance is to combine North America's largest scandium resource with Canada's top metal printing research capacity on a single testbed, with the core focus being whether LPBF parameter optimization can lower the cost of Al-Sc alloys to the critical threshold for commercialization.
