The 2024 Jiangsu Province Youth Science and Technology Outstanding Contribution Award was presented on November 6 at the Provincial Science and Technology Awards Conference held in Nanjing. The recipient was Gu Dongdong, Dean and Professor of the College of Materials Science and Technology at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, honored for his systematic original achievements in the field of laser additive manufacturing. The original materials and laser additive manufacturing technologies developed by Gu Dongdong's team have been implemented and applied at more than 10 aerospace institutions. Last year, the team 3D printed a large, specially shaped high-strength aluminum alloy component via laser additive manufacturing, which was installed in the country's latest-generation aircraft. Gu Dongdong was the first to propose the holistic concept of "integrated material-structure-performance laser additive manufacturing," enabling the simultaneous printing of multi-material layouts and multi-level structures inside complex components. The related results were published in the main journal Science in May 2021 and have been cited more than 1,600 times in the five years since publication. This approach differs from the traditional serial trial-and-error development process of "structural design-material selection-processing technology-achieving performance." Its technical object is the layer-by-layer melting and solidification of metal powder by laser within a sealed chamber. The team is currently envisioning integrating artificial intelligence technologies such as machine learning into physical manufacturing to make process regulation and process control more intelligent. The news explicitly mentions that metal 3D printing is expanding from aerospace into fields such as new energy vehicles and consumer electronics; smartphone hinges and smartwatch cases are already manufactured using 3D printing. Gu Dongdong positions the above principles and technologies as universal technologies that can be cross-integrated with different disciplines and application scenarios.
