U.S. small modular reactor startup NX Atomics has partnered with industrial-scale metal additive manufacturing company Sciaky to apply Sciaky's electron beam additive manufacturing (EBAM) process in the production of components for NX Atomics' small modular reactor platform. Sciaky's EBAM technology uses a high-energy electron beam in a vacuum chamber to rapidly melt metal wire (e.g., titanium alloys, nickel-based alloys) and build metal parts layer by layer, with deposition rates typically ranging from 7 to 20 pounds per hour and the ability to produce large metal parts exceeding 6 meters in length. The partnership aims to replace traditional long-cycle manufacturing methods such as casting and forging with industrial 3D printing, reducing lead times from years to months. NX Atomics' fifth-generation VELA reactor is positioned to provide baseload electricity and high-temperature process heat to AI data centers and heavy industrial facilities.
