A new study in Applied Thermal Engineering: A Nagoya University team used laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) to fabricate graded BCC porous lattices (AlSi12 powder, with porosity distributed along a height gradient) for two-phase immersion cooling in AI data centers. At 80% average porosity, the graded lattice's heat transfer coefficient was approximately 137% higher than that of a uniform lattice (large-area critical heat flux reached 1758 kW/m²); the graded porosity guides bubble growth and liquid replenishment, addressing the 100–150 W/cm²-level heat dissipation challenge of AI chips. Liquid cooling for AI servers is the next major application area for additive manufacturing, and porous lattice heat sinks will drive volume orders for high-thermal-conductivity aluminum alloy powders (AlSi12/AlSi10Mg). Value for powder buyers: ① Demand is rising for high-thermal-conductivity aluminum alloy powders (AlSi12/AlSi10Mg) in data center cooling applications—stock up in advance and validate grades; ② Lattice structures are sensitive to powder particle size distribution and flowability, so co-develop dedicated powder specifications for heat sink structures with customers; ③ Powder producers that can provide porosity–heat transfer performance data will have priority access to certification opportunities in the data center supply chain.
