America Makes and the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM) have selected General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI) to lead the GOTHAAM project, a $5.5 million initiative to qualify multiple sources of Scalmalloy high-strength aluminum alloy powder for defense production. Consortium members include Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Airbus Defence and Space, APWORKS, Equispheres, and Dyndrite, among others. The project will establish an MMPDS allowables database covering small, medium, and large laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) systems, reducing the risk of relying on a single supplier of high-strength aluminum powder for defense applications and accelerating the adoption of Scalmalloy in aerospace and defense at scale.
