October 9, 2026 – Gränges Powder Metallurgy (GPM), in collaboration with PINT and France's IRT M2P, is developing two aluminum-scandium alloys for laser beam powder bed fusion (PBF-LB), with first demonstration parts expected in 2027. The first alloy, Al-Si-Sc, features high silicon and scandium content and targets applications requiring high heat resistance and dimensional accuracy. The second, Al-Mg-Sc, is being developed for hydrogen environments at 100–250°C, with fatigue performance as the key metric. The addition of scandium significantly refines the grain structure of aluminum alloys and suppresses hot cracking, making it an important direction for aluminum-based additive manufacturing materials. As a leading European aluminum rolling and powder metallurgy company, Gränges is partnering with European additive manufacturing research institutions to develop dedicated print alloys, which will enrich the supply landscape for PBF-LB aluminum materials. Value for powder buyers: 1) From 2027, two new AM-specific grades, Al-Si-Sc and Al-Mg-Sc, will be available in Europe, allowing early evaluation for heat-resistant and hydrogen environment applications; 2) Scandium raw material cost is a key pricing variable—monitor grade pricing and compare cost-effectiveness against existing AlSi10Mg and Scalmalloy; 3) Powder demand for emerging scenarios such as hydrogen energy equipment is worth early positioning.
