On September 28, 2026, City University of Hong Kong (CityU) and the University of Cambridge jointly established the Centre for Advanced and Smart Manufacturing (CASM), located at Hong Kong Science Park. The centre is part of the SEAM@InnoHK cluster under the Hong Kong government's InnoHK initiative. It is co-led by Professor Jian Lu of CityU and Professor Colm Durkan of Cambridge, with Cambridge set to establish a satellite institution in Hong Kong. The centre uses 3D printing as its core technology platform and focuses on four major application areas: (1) AI data center cooling/thermal management—printing complex flow channels, thin walls, and lattice heat exchangers; (2) next-generation environmentally friendly refrigeration; (3) lightweighting for new energy vehicles—AI-assisted design + additive manufacturing + recycled 'green aluminum'; (4) new materials for consumer electronics. This is a flagship industry-academia-research platform in additive manufacturing between top universities in Hong Kong and the UK, pushing 3D printing into frontier applications such as AI data center cooling and new energy vehicle lightweighting, with significant demonstrative value. Value for powder buyers: university-level printing platforms typically do not use closed proprietary powders. Their aluminum alloy/copper alloy thermal management and green aluminum directions will generate demand for small-batch research powder procurement and industry-academia-research collaboration. Pay attention to the powder specifications corresponding to their equipment selection.
