GKN Aerospace plans to extend additive manufacturing across multiple aircraft engine programs and component types, having already delivered over 600 fan case mounting rings for Pratt & Whitney's geared turbofan engines, with full production expected by 2025. For the upstream metal powder industry, GKN is concurrently developing laser metal deposition (wire) and powder bed processes—the latter starting with LM2500 gas turbine turbine strut certification, which may promote standardized application of nickel- and titanium-based powders in aviation certification frameworks. Downstream, GKN is collaborating with GE and Rolls-Royce to develop engine components for GEnx and GE9X, and has manufactured a nearly 2-meter diameter fully additively manufactured titanium alloy engine casing, indicating that large structural additive manufacturing has entered airworthiness certification stages. Notably, GKN has shortened certification cycles from seven years to about two years by accumulating process consistency data across multiple sites, which will accelerate metal 3D printing's penetration from non-load-bearing parts to primary load-bearing structures and drive additive repair technologies to reduce scrap rates and supply chain pressures.
