Italian tooling manufacturer Eligio Re Fraschini and large-format additive manufacturing solutions provider Caracol have completed a joint pilot project, using Caracol's Vipra AM robotic wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) platform to print an aerospace wing spar tooling component. The part measures 1000×550×85mm, weighs 110 kg, and was produced from 316L stainless steel via near-net-shape printing in just 30 hours, achieving a deposition rate of 3.7 kg/h. It was then finished to final specifications via CNC machining. Traditionally, such tooling relies on machining or casting, which involve long lead times, low material utilization, and limited design freedom. Comparative evaluation shows that the additive manufacturing route significantly reduces material waste and improves resource efficiency, with the 3D-printed tooling achieving a 50% weight reduction compared to the original aerospace component. Caracol notes that the project establishes a clear technical and economic basis for future deployment, demonstrating that the same manufacturing solution can be scaled and integrated into active production programs.
