UK-based metal powder producer Phoenix Scientific Industries (PSI) has successfully developed and scaled up a process for coating 316L stainless steel powder with boron nitride nanoparticles for additive manufacturing. The process overcomes the industrial challenge of uniformly dispersing and coating nanoparticles on metal powder surfaces. PSI uses a solution-based dispersion method to reduce agglomerates to 1–2 microns and identified a fluidized bed reactor process as the most effective coating route, producing two 20 kg batches of coated powder with coating quality equivalent to lab trials. Next steps focus on laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing and mechanical property evaluation. Founded in 1987 and headquartered in Hailsham, East Sussex, UK, PSI specializes in metal powder atomization technologies, offering integrated solutions including thermal and specialty metallurgy processes.
