Reported on August 27, 2026: The U.S. Navy has released a Project Peculiar Document (PPD) technical specification establishing a repeatable pathway for using additively manufactured (AM) metal parts to replace traditional cast/forged components in submarine construction, maintenance, and repair. The specification authorizes immediate use in submarine design, construction, overhaul, and repair. Under the previous process, each part replacement required individual engineering evaluation, manual drawing revisions, and repeated first-article testing. The new specification eliminates these steps: qualified AM replacements can be deployed without repeated approvals. High-consequence applications, such as SUBSAFE systems and Level 1 material control, must still meet Navy quality requirements, with additional full traceability and non-destructive testing. Vice Admiral Robert Gaucher, the Navy's Submarine Program Director, called this "a barrier that must be dismantled," authorizing engineers, shipyards, and suppliers to execute at scale. This opens a comprehensive pathway for metal AM parts—including nickel-based, copper-nickel, and titanium alloys—into the U.S. Navy submarine supply chain, signaling an institutional demand surge for defense-grade metal powders.
