A research team from the University of Pittsburgh and other institutions published a paper in *Additive Manufacturing*, proposing laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) process optimization through full-part thermal history control. Using Alloy 718 as a case study, the team combined thermal simulation with trajectory optimization algorithms to dynamically adjust laser power and substrate temperature, achieving in-situ age hardening. The optimized inverted cone parts showed an average hardness improvement from 374 ± 41 HV to 439 ± 29 HV, with enhanced uniformity and no need for post-heat treatment, maintaining a repeatability error within 8%.
