California-based Porsche tuner BBI Autosport, in collaboration with 3D Systems' engineering team, has officially integrated metal additive manufacturing into custom part production. Key results include 3D printing hot-end components such as exhaust and intake manifolds using Inconel alloy, achieving weight reduction, fewer welds, improved performance, and significantly shorter lead times. BBI has also developed metal and composite parts for suspension and bodywork, and plans to shift from one-off modifications to small-batch full vehicle production. Upstream demand for metal powders will grow with such high-performance applications, while the potential for downstream batch production via 3D printing in automotive tuning merits attention.
