Swiss metal materials specialist Feramic has introduced HOVADUR CNCS, a precipitation-hardened copper-nickel-silicon-chromium alloy designed for industrial 3D-printed components that must withstand both high mechanical and thermal loads, targeting toolmaking and aerospace applications. With a thermal conductivity of 240 W/mK—far exceeding traditional tool steels—this material significantly reduces cycle times in injection molding and die casting while improving temperature distribution uniformity. It offers tensile strength ≥650 MPa and is positioned as a beryllium-free copper-based alternative. Manufactured via laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), it enables near-net-shape conformal cooling channels unachievable with conventional methods. The alloy has been validated under extreme thermal conditions in a rotating detonation rocket engine as part of the PEGASUS rocket project at ETH Zurich.
