A research team at Tianjin University has proposed a composition-process synergistic strategy to address hot cracking in IN738LC nickel-based superalloy during additive manufacturing, combining Co microalloying with hot isostatic pressing (HIP) post-treatment. The designed IN738LC-5Co alloy leverages a dual mechanism of solid-solution strengthening and γ' precipitate phase behavior control, where Co addition modulates phase transformation behavior and local stress distribution, while HIP post-treatment further heals microcracks and reduces transformation stresses. This results in excellent performance at 900°C, achieving 24% elongation and 566 MPa tensile strength, balancing high strength with low cracking susceptibility. The study provides a viable solution for additive manufacturing of non-weldable nickel-based superalloys and offers theoretical foundations and engineering guidance for future rapid industrial fabrication.
