Meltio and Japanese machine tool builder HORKOS have jointly launched the NX70 DUO dual-head hybrid machining center, integrating wire laser metal deposition (LMD) with five-axis machining in a single machine. The two heads alternate between additive forming and precision finishing, targeting mold manufacturing and high-value part repair applications. The first unit has been sold to a major international customer. The wire LMD approach uses metal wire instead of powder feedstock, significantly lowering material costs and safety management requirements compared with powder bed processes, making it a low-barrier entry point for traditional machine shops moving into additive manufacturing. Meltio previously expanded through an open ecosystem of print heads plus machine tools, and its channel coverage is accelerating further through partnerships with mainstream machine tool builders. Value for powder buyers: (1) The expansion of the wire route may divert some short-term demand for mold steel and nickel-based repair powders, but it also brings additive manufacturing into more traditional workshops and expands the industry base; (2) Powder producers can focus on customers pursuing both wire and powder routes—when wire customers upgrade to powder bed processes, they often become a source of incremental demand for high-value powders.
