Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) collaborated with Boeing to produce a nearly 2-ton stamping forming die (SFD) in eight weeks using multi-material WAAM technology. The tooling supports NASA's Hi-Rate Composite Aircraft Manufacturing project. It features a low-carbon steel structure with a stainless steel working surface, integrally formed internal curved cooling channels, and was optimized through 32 simulation iterations to limit distortion to within a few millimeters. The wire-based process, alongside powder bed processes, serves as a reference within the metal additive manufacturing landscape.
