1. Copper Grades — Conductivity, Strength, or Wear?

Copper conducts heat and electricity second only to silver at roughly one tenth of the cost — but pure copper is notoriously hard to laser-print because it reflects most infrared light. The copper AM market therefore splits into four practical grades, each solving a different problem.

GradeStrengtheningKey FeaturePrice (CNY/kg)Primary Applications
CuCrZrCr/Zr precipitation (Cr 0.5-1.2 · Zr 0.03-0.3)High strength + high conductivity, prints better than pure Cu¥390–465 (median ~450)Welding electrodes, mold inserts, heat sinks, fusion components
CuCrNbCr₂Nb precipitateHigh-temp softening resistance (GRCop-42 class)¥1500–1800Rocket combustion chambers, high-heat-flux electronics
CuSn10Sn solid solution (Sn 9-11 · P ≤0.1)Bearing bronze: wear resistance + oil-film retentionRequest quotePlain bearings, bushings, worm gears, hydraulic parts
Pure CuNone (≥99.9% Cu)Maximum conductivity; needs green laser / high power~¥300Heat sinks, inductors, PM parts, MIM components
💡 PS Price Index Data (2026): CuCrZr 15-53µm quotes sit at ¥390-465/kg with a median near ¥450; C18150 (CuCrZr standard grade) median ~¥500/kg in a ¥380-650 band. CuCrNb is the premium niche at ¥1500-1800/kg — the Cr₂Nb precipitate and the master-alloy barrier justify the gap. Pure copper quotes land near ¥300/kg. 2. The Laser Absorption Problem — and How Each Grade Deals With It

Pure copper: Reflects most 1064 nm fiber-laser light, so LPBF requires high laser power or a green (515 nm) source. If your machine is a standard IR fiber system, verify printability before buying powder — or choose CuCrZr.
CuCrZr: Chromium and zirconium raise absorption versus pure copper and give precipitation hardening, making it the most mature laser-printable copper. Aged conductivity can reach 80% IACS class — the "electricity + heat" engineering grade.
CuCrNb: The Cr₂Nb precipitate keeps strength at temperature where CuCrZr softens — the NASA GRCop-84/GRCop-42 combustion-chamber design idea. Verify lead time and master-alloy batch stability first; they matter more than price.
CuSn10: Tin changes the game entirely — this is a bearing material, printed for complex oil channels or press-and-sintered in volume. Control tin oxidation during processing.

3. Applications by Grade

  • Resistance welding electrodes & continuous-casting molds: CuCrZr — strength plus conductivity under thermal cycling.
  • Liquid rocket engine combustion chambers & nozzles: CuCrNb — conducts extreme heat flux while retaining strength (GRCop approach).
  • Bearings, bushings, worm gears, hydraulic wear parts: CuSn10 — the classic bronze anti-friction behavior, printed with conformal oil channels.
  • Heat sinks, inductors, MIM and PM components: pure copper — maximum conductivity where laser absorption is managed.
  • Fusion-device high-heat-flux components: both CuCrZr and CuCrNb appear in Chinese fusion programs, often with conformal cooling channels.

4. China vs Global Supply

6. Buying Checklist

  • ✓ Pick the cut by process: 15-53µm for SLM, 53-150µm for LMD/DED; multiple cuts are offered for CuCrNb.
  • ✓ Check oxygen content — copper oxidizes readily and oxides degrade both conductivity and print quality.
  • ✓ For CuCrZr: require aged-condition hardness and conductivity data, not as-atomized values.
  • ✓ For CuCrNb: negotiate lead time and master-alloy batch stability before price.
  • ✓ For pure Cu LPBF: confirm your laser (IR high-power or green) can actually melt the powder.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is CuCrNb so much more expensive than CuCrZr?The niobium addition needs a high-barrier master alloy, volumes are small, and the target users (aerospace propulsion) tolerate premium pricing. The ¥1500-1800/kg band reflects that niche economics — not raw-material cost.
Can I print pure copper on a standard fiber-laser LPBF machine?Pure copper reflects most 1064 nm light, so standard machines struggle. High-power IR or green-laser systems work. If your fleet is standard IR, CuCrZr is the practical printable alternative.
CuSn10 for LPBF or for sintering? Both routes exist and both need tin oxidation control. Use press-and-sinter powder for volume bearing parts, spherical LPBF powder for complex oil-channel designs. Confirm tin content and impurity profile in either case.
