The University of Nottingham has officially launched the UK's highest-pressure cold spray additive manufacturing (CSAM) center, with core equipment jointly designed and installed in collaboration with Japan's Plasma Giken. Operating at working pressures far exceeding conventional systems, it accelerates spray particles to higher velocities upon impact, enabling the deposition and repair of high-performance alloys without any heating—performed entirely below the material's melting point. This process avoids heat-affected zones and preserves the original microstructure, which is critical for repairing high-value components such as aerospace turbine blades and nuclear reactor parts. The center is supported by UK Research and Innovation, EPSRC, Rolls-Royce, and BAE Systems, positioned as a national open-access platform for UK industries and academia. The team recently also produced tungsten-copper composite coatings via single-step plasma spraying for fusion reactor divertors.
