Engineers at the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) have developed a hybrid manufacturing process centered on high-pressure cold spray, depositing copper in solid form at rates up to 10 kg/h to build the main structure of copper rocket nozzles with complex cooling channels. Compared to traditional manufacturing, lead times are reduced from months to days, and material waste is significantly decreased. The method still requires validation through full rocket engine testing but is already considered a viable solution for repair applications and high-value industries demanding robust and corrosion-resistant materials, such as aerospace, energy, and shipbuilding.
