FlexCycle Solutions has been shortlisted as a finalist for the Formnext Awards 2026: its technology mechanically extracts copper powder from electronic waste for additive manufacturing, with particle morphology expected to improve LPBF laser absorptivity. The team comes from TU Bergakademie Freiberg (IART) and focuses on a purely mechanical powder production route for foil-type metal scrap, cutting energy consumption by about 60% compared with melt atomization; the award ceremony will be held in Frankfurt on November 19. The entry of recycled-source powder into formal award consideration reflects growing European buyer interest in low-carbon/recycled powders; if the mechanical powder route proves viable, the cost structure of recycled copper powder will be significantly lower than that of the atomization route. Value for powder buyers: (1) if recycled copper powder reaches mass production, it will create a cost structure lower than the atomization route, putting pressure on virgin powder pricing; (2) as low-carbon procurement preferences rise in Europe, recycled powder is worth reserving as an ESG product line direction; (3) monitor its particle morphology and laser absorptivity metrics to assess the quality boundaries of blended use.
