October 27 report: Sweden-based Freemelt has won two consecutive orders for tungsten components in the nuclear sector—from the European Spallation Source (ESS) and Fusion for Energy (F4E)—totaling over 40,000 parts and approximately €7.8 million. The tungsten parts are printed using EBM electron beam melting; tungsten's melting point is as high as 3410°C, making conventional processing difficult, and EBM's high-temperature preheating capability makes it one of the few viable additive manufacturing routes for nuclear tungsten components. Deliveries will be phased, for components used in extreme environments such as neutron target stations and fusion devices; Freemelt has already begun expanding production capacity to meet future demand. Value for powder buyers: ① The placement of nuclear/fusion tungsten component orders confirms that additive demand for tungsten powder is moving from research to volume procurement, and the supply landscape for high-end tungsten powder in Europe and the US will tighten; ② China leads globally in tungsten resources and powder production capacity, representing a strategic window to enter the European nuclear supply chain; ③ Monitor the specifications of subsequent ESS/F4E tenders (particle size, purity, batch size) and assess export compliance and certification costs.
