Professor Gu Dongdong's team at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics published "Laser additive manufacturing of high-performance tungsten alloy by controlling thermal input" in Science China Technological Sciences (2026, 69(2): 1220201). Using yttrium (Y)-alloyed tungsten, they formed W-Y alloy via LPBF at different laser energy densities and combined finite element simulation to reveal temperature field distribution and metallurgical defect formation mechanisms. At the optimal energy density, density reached 98.6%, average grain size was 15.83 μm, ultimate compressive strength was 1531.93 MPa, elongation was 21.57%, and microhardness was 556.4 HV0.2, significantly improving strength and wear resistance compared with pure tungsten samples. New progress has been made on the cracking and densification challenges of laser additive manufacturing of tungsten-based refractory alloys—the route of laser heat input control plus rare-earth alloying has direct reference value for domestic tungsten powder manufacturers' powder grade development (W-Y series).
