Australian metal 3D printing company Aurora Labs (ASX: A3D) announced on October 30 that it has raised A$6 million (approximately US$4.2 million) to expand production of small turbojet engines for defense and aerospace customers. The financing comes just days after the company received its first U.S. engine order, marking a shift in its business focus from selling 3D printing technology to manufacturing propulsion systems. The placement issues approximately 109.1 million shares at A$0.055 per share, a 6.77% discount to the October 23 closing price of A$0.059; the company requested a trading halt on October 26. The financing is in two tranches: the first tranche of approximately A$4.6 million will settle in early November, while the remaining A$1.4 million requires shareholder approval at a meeting in January 2027. Chairman David Trimboli is subscribing A$550,000, and Australian automotive engineering group Walkinshaw Group is making a strategic investment; the two parties will explore production support collaboration and Aurora providing metal additive manufacturing services to Walkinshaw. Proceeds will be used to expand the turbojet engine production line, procure industrial-grade metal 3D printing equipment, improve manufacturing documentation and systems, expand personnel, and support business development, intellectual property protection, and aerospace quality compliance. The company has spent years developing its own metal 3D printers and manufacturing technology and is now leveraging this know-how to move into low-volume to scaled production of engines for drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles. Value for powder buyers: (1) Aurora's production expansion will increase procurement volumes of aerospace-grade powders such as nickel-based superalloys and titanium alloys, and its engine production line has stringent requirements for powder batch consistency and certification documentation; (2) Walkinshaw's involvement signals interest from traditional automotive engineering groups in metal AM manufacturing, opening a window for local Australian superalloy powder supply and certification partnerships.
