On November 1, Somerville, Massachusetts-based Studio 3e8 announced the Mesa 1 desktop metal 3D printer with a built-in sintering furnace. It is scheduled to launch on Kickstarter on December 1, 2026, with a starting price of $3,500. The Mesa 1 uses a powder direct extrusion process that requires no laser or binder. After printing, there is no loose metal powder to clean up and no support structures to remove. Together with the built-in sintering furnace, it enables end-to-end metal part production, targeting makers and low-volume metal prototyping. Desktop metal printing has long been constrained by equipment cost and post-processing barriers. The Mesa 1's $3,500 price point challenges this status quo, and together with trends such as AI voice ordering in 'Vibe manufacturing,' it is lowering the barrier from idea to metal part. For powder companies, the growth of desktop metal printing will create demand for small-pack, multi-grade metal powders. Companies can get ahead by developing retail-level stainless steel and titanium alloy powder product lines.
