U.S. spacecraft manufacturer Fortastra has signed a memorandum of understanding with advanced manufacturing firm Hadrian to explore the application of advanced manufacturing methods, including 3D printing, in spacecraft development programs. Fortastra designs and operates highly maneuverable spacecraft for in-orbit security. Hadrian will provide precision machining and additive manufacturing capabilities, while Fortastra contributes expertise in space hardware qualification. The two parties will jointly evaluate additive manufacturing processes such as metal and polymer 3D printing, directed energy deposition, and binder jetting, as well as subtractive methods like precision CNC machining, electrical discharge machining, and laser cutting. Hadrian will participate in design reviews, offering design-for-manufacturability reviews and manufacturing feasibility assessments. The collaboration aims to reduce lead times, lower costs, and enhance performance for the U.S. Space Force and intelligence community. Hadrian established a dedicated additive manufacturing division earlier this year to deliver scaled production services to defense customers.
