U.S. metal additive manufacturing company Velo3D is opening a new production facility in Livermore, California, to meet growing demand from the aerospace and defense sectors. The 289,000-square-foot factory—roughly the size of five American football fields—includes 270,000 square feet of manufacturing space with ceiling heights exceeding 36 feet. Initially equipped with more than 40 Velo3D metal 3D printers, the facility's infrastructure is designed to scale to over 100 systems. The new plant focuses on serial production, while the Fremont headquarters continues to support R&D, application engineering, and qualification. Over the past six months, Velo3D has secured a $32.6 million contract from the U.S. Department of Defense, signed a CRADA agreement with the U.S. Army DEVCOM, and won a $11.5 million multi-year production contract from a prime defense contractor. Velo3D states that the new facility will be among the largest advanced metal additive manufacturing environments in North America.
