The team of Professors Qu Xuanhui and Zhang Lin from the University of Science and Technology Beijing has received the certificate and medal for the Special Commendation Gold Medal from the Jury of the 51st Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions. The award-winning project is Large-Size High-Purity Refractory Metal Products. Other main contributors include Li Xingyu of the University of Science and Technology Beijing, Dong Didi and Xiong Ning of Advanced Technology & Materials Co., Ltd., and Feng Pengfa of Jinduicheng Molybdenum Co., Ltd. This award is the highest-level prize at the Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions and is usually granted to only about 2 to 5 percent of top inventions, requiring unanimous approval by the jury. Supported by a key special project of the National Key R&D Program, the team invented a set of technologies for controlling the microstructure and properties of powder metallurgy refractory metal products and successfully applied them at leading enterprises such as Advanced Technology & Materials Co., Ltd. and Jinduicheng Molybdenum Co., Ltd. The world's largest refractory metal tubes and crucibles developed by the team have been successfully applied in equipment for preparing key materials such as quartz crystals and sapphire single crystals for the semiconductor industry, increasing production efficiency by 3 to 4 times and reducing production costs by more than 50 percent. The related theoretical and methodological results won the first prize of the 2022 China Nonferrous Metals Industry Science and Technology Award (Invention), and the industrialization technology results won the first prize of the 2025 Ministry of Education Engineering Technology Research Achievement Award. Founded in 1973, the Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions is jointly organized by the Swiss Federal Government, the Canton of Geneva, the City of Geneva and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). It is one of the world's three major invention exhibitions and is held once a year. Exhibits must have been granted invention patents and have applied for international patents. The evaluation criteria include the innovation, practicality and technical difficulty of the projects, and comprehensive assessments are conducted by experts from Europe. The exhibition's awards are divided into three levels: gold, silver and bronze. The Special Commendation Gold Medal from the Jury is the highest-level award selected from among the gold medals.
